When the ladies over at The Little Black Book asked me to go train at True Combat my initial impression was: Me? Little old me? I’d probably get knocked out by the punching bag before I could throw it a punch! After all I am only about 1.55m tall and weigh less than most 16 year old boys… Of course being the huge competitor that I am I decided to take on the challenge even if it meant a blue eye or two 🙂
True Combat Gym is situated at 186 Bree Street in Cape Town so it’s perfect location for anyone wanting go let off some steam after a stressful day at work. (Yes, punching and kicking people does help!) They also have a gym located in Glenhazel , Johanneburg which is where they first started out. They specialize in:
- Muay Thai: Known as the art of 8 limbs. Stand up striking using fists, elbows, knees and shins
- Kickboxing: Combines the elements of karate with kicking and boxing
- K1: Similar to Muay Thai except you’re not allowed to elbow punch and no clinching (wrapping opponents arms)
It was up until the day that I joined True Combat that I realized that I knew absolutely nothing about fighting or defending myself! It’s quite a scary thought to think that that if I were ever in a situation where I’d need to defend myself, I’d be completely helpless. At least now I know a few techniques on how to throw a good punch!
Now before everyone runs off to True Combat wanting to go legally punch people, I’ll have you know it’s not just about that. Cardio and strength training is also incorporated into the classes. It varies everyday so one day you might warm up with running and the next day with a skipping rope. Your classes usually finish off with strength training (lunges, push-ups, sit-ups, stretches, squats) so you’re literally getting a full body work out.
True Combat offers classes for men, women, children of all ages as well as PRO and Amateur athletes. Each branch also has a Thai Head Coach so you can be sure that you’ll get the full Muay Thai experience.
Membership costs R500 a month for as many classes as you like. Private sessions for around R220/hr for adults and R165/hr for children under the age of 18. If you’re interested in attending a free trial class Monday – Thursday at 6pm you’re welcome to do so, contact details are below to set up an appointment.
True Combat also runs the coolest giveaways on their social media pages where you can win memberships so be sure to head to their social media pages to keep up to date with their latest news!
